Homemade Hot Sauce With Serrano Chili Peppers

Homemade Hot Sauce With Serrano Chili Peppers

Ingredients:

  • 10-12 fresh serrano chili peppers, stems removed
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a sweeter profile)
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice (optional, for added tanginess)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients: a. Wash the serrano peppers thoroughly, and remove the stems. b. Peel the garlic cloves and chop the onion into chunks.

  2. Cooking the Peppers: a. In a saucepan, combine serrano peppers, garlic cloves, chopped onion, water, and salt. b. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. c. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the peppers are soft.

  3. Blending: a. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. b. Transfer the mixture to a blender, adding the vinegar, and sugar and lime juice if using. c. Blend until smooth. For a chunkier sauce, pulse the blender a few times until the desired consistency is reached.

  4. Straining (Optional): a. If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can strain the mixture using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the pulp, collecting the liquid in a bowl underneath.

  5. Bottling: a. Pour the hot sauce into sterilized bottles or jars, seal tightly. b. Refrigerate the hot sauce for at least 24 hours before using to allow the flavors to meld. c. Store in the refrigerator. The sauce should be good for up to a month.

Notes:

  • Taste Adjustment: Taste the hot sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed, adding more salt, sugar, or vinegar as desired.
  • Heat Level: For a milder sauce, you can remove the seeds and membranes from the peppers before cooking.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Drizzle over tacos, eggs, or grilled meats.
  • Mix into soups, stews, or sauces for added heat and flavor.
  • Use as a marinade for chicken, pork, or vegetables.

Remember to handle hot peppers with care and wash your hands thoroughly after handling, or wear gloves to avoid irritation. Enjoy your homemade serrano chili hot sauce!
