Portuguese Prego Rolls

Portuguese Prego Rolls

Portuguese prego rolls are delicious sandwich rolls filled with marinated and grilled steak, typically seasoned with garlic and spices. They are a popular street food in Portugal. Here’s a recipe to make Portuguese prego rolls:

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 1 pound (450g) sirloin or ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Juice of 1 lemon

For the Rolls:

  • 4 Portuguese or crusty sandwich rolls
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
  • Sliced tomatoes (optional)
  • Sliced onions (optional)
  • Lettuce leaves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Steak:

    • In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, sweet paprika, chili flakes, olive oil, salt, black pepper, and lemon juice. This mixture will serve as your marinade.
    • Place the thinly sliced steak in a zip-top bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over it. Seal the bag or cover the dish and marinate the steak in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or longer if possible.
  2. Grill the Steak:

    • Preheat your grill or a grill pan over medium-high heat.
    • Remove the steak from the marinade, allowing any excess liquid to drip off.
    • Grill the steak slices for about 2-3 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. You can baste the steak with the remaining marinade while grilling for added flavor.
    • Once cooked to your liking, remove the steak from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips.
  3. Prepare the Garlic Butter:

    • In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter.
    • Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and stir. You can gently heat it to infuse the garlic flavor into the butter.
  4. Toast the Rolls:

    • Slice the Portuguese rolls in half and toast them on a grill or in a toaster until they are lightly golden and crisp.
  5. Assemble the Prego Rolls:

    • Brush the inside of each roll with the garlic butter mixture.
    • Add the grilled steak strips to each roll.
    • Optionally, add sliced tomatoes, onions, and lettuce for freshness and crunch.
    • Sprinkle fresh chopped parsley over the steak.
    • Top each roll with the other half and press gently to make sure all the flavors meld together.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve your Portuguese prego rolls immediately while they’re hot and the flavors are at their peak.

Enjoy your homemade Portuguese prego rolls as a delicious and satisfying sandwich. They’re perfect for a quick meal or as a delightful snack!
